charged with investigating strange planetary system around a black hole with two stars above the galactic disk. It's a six year journey at high warp.

Along the journey, leaving Federation territory, upwardly, a new empire is discovered, but they know of the Federation that has existed below them, they are not friendly towards the Federation. They refuse to allow passage, but Captain Clevel decides to push through. The ensuing battle causes great damage to the ship, one of the reasons later they must abandon ship. A certain shield component that can't be replaced gets broken, and it's the special shield modification that allows the ship's engines to safely interact with the rings around the planet. This ultimately results in the ship exploding during evacuation, causing all pods and shuttles to be thrown off course.

The plan is to have colonizing teams scattered throughout the planet, groups of five pods plus a shuttle craft are supposed to land at the same coordinates on the planet.
