Commander and Professor Matthew Clevell is promoted to Captain and given command of a mission to the outskirts of the galaxy, to colonize a world. He is a professor of Survival Tactics on alien worlds, and Cultural Anthropology. His focus is how to survive while studying ancient civilizations. His classes are rarely boring.

He gets to design his own ship and select the crew to offer the mission to. Volunteer mission. 

Contacts retired professor Dr Keiko O'Brien for suggestions of botany students that might want to join the mission. Wanting lots of botany students, at least students that took botany classes. (he contacts other professors for advice on students, current and former)

When contacting potential crew, they are informed that the ship still has to be designed and built, so they have time to decide and time to finish their academy training if they are still enrolled.
